Truly Living Is Not Depressing

“6 months to live? Sounds depressing!” I get this response a lot. So much in fact that I’ve even considered changing the name of the blog. It’s understandably difficult to overcome the pervasive negative connotation that comes with facing a terminal illness, or death.

Death is a reminder. Whether we ‘know’ when our time will come or not, it comes to us all. It is a natural part of life, and for some reason many cultures, especially Western ones, deal with death by ignoring it, by labeling it as depressing, or worse, by taking life for granted.ย The true tragedy is going through life without passion, without love, without taking chances, without feeling trulyย alive.ย

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

–Henry David Thoreau

Whether you believe in reincarnation or in living once, we only get to experience this life one time, so make it awesome! Whatever that means for you. If you want a family, have one! If you want to invest time in a community and make a difference, go for it! If you dream of sailing the world, find a way! Many many years from now after living a long, full, and beautiful life, I hope you look back and think, “Wow! that was my life, and I truly lived!
